Alumina Calcined 300# is used in glazes. This mesh size achieves the best results in glazes.
Alumina has the effect of raising the firing temperature and increasing viscosity or flow. Overloading a glaze with alumina can create a matt glaze. The tendency of glazes with high clay content to crawl may be reduced by the introduction of alumina replacing clay. Alumina is also a useful addition to underglaze colours if the underglaze crawls.
Alumina is used in batt wash because of the high melting point of 2050°C. So alumina is an important ingredient in refractory bodies. Alumina 300 # should be used in glazes and may also be used in clay bodies.
