SiO2 is the primary glass former in clay and glazes. Vitrification, fluidity, transparency and opacity are controlled by adding fluxes and/or refractories. Not good to inhale as Silicosis (A disease of the lungs caused by continued inhalation of the dust of siliceous minerals and characterized by progressive fibrosis and a chronic shortness of breath) may result.
